The manuscript entitled “Comments on: Structure evolution mechanism of highly ordered graphite during carbonization of cellulose nanocrystals” comments on the paper by Eom et al. As corresponding author of this paper, I would like to express the deepest appreciation for the critical comments made by Marc Monthioux. The main objectives of the study are to trace the carbonization behavior of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) at a wide temperature range, and to observe structure development by various characterization methods. The oxidative stabilization was also used to show the differences in carbonization behaviors. Based on the comments, we have carefully reviewed our paper and agreed with the comments indicating that some of the terminologies may introduce misunderstanding of the observed phenomena. The key findings of the study are focused on the structure development of highly crystalline CNC particles, which appear to be carbonized differently when compared to conventional cellulosic materials (also known as hard carbon). It should also be noted that the commercial CNCs not only contain fibril-structured highly crystalline particles, but they also have disordered cellulose because acid-hydrolysis cannot remove amorphous cellulose completely. Based on these perspectives and the comments, herein we present our opinion for the comments as follows.
